  • A specific bequest names a specific asset or amount to be left to the foundation, such as certain stocks, bonds, a cash amount, real estate or collectible items. The language of a specific bequest may appear in the will as follows:

I leave [name asset] to the Kent State University Foundation Inc. This asset is to be used according to the most recent guidelines as executed by myself, the university and the Kent State University Foundation.

  • A percentage bequest names a percentage of the entire estate. The language here might appear as follows:

I leave [X%] of my entire estate to the Kent State University Foundation Inc. These assets are to be used according to the most recent guidelines, as executed by myself, the university and the Kent State University Foundation.

  • A residuary bequest is a bequest of assets from the estate not named in the other parts of the will. The language for this type of bequest may appear as follows:

Specify Your Estate Gift to WKSU

A service of Kent State University, WKSU partners with the Kent State University Foundation and Kent State's Center for Gift and Estate Planning. The Kent State University Foundation, Inc. is a private 501 (c) 3 foundation that accepts, distributes, and invests charitable contributions from private sources for the benefit of Kent State University and WKSU. Because the University is a state agency, any gifts made directly to it become the property of the state of Ohio and thus, may not fulfill the wishes of the donor.

Therefore, donors should designate their bequests to The Kent State University Foundation, Inc./WKSU

Basically, there are three types of bequests:

  • A specific bequest names a specific asset to be left to the Foundation/WKSU such as certain stocks, a cash amount, real estate or collectible items. Language of a specific bequest may appear as:

I leave {name asset} to the Kent State University Foundation, Inc. /WKSU, to be used according to the most recent guidelines ** as executed by myself, the University, WKSU and the Kent State University Foundation.

  • A percentage bequest names a percentage of the entire estate. The language might appear as:

I leave (___%) of my entire estate to the Kent State University Foundation, Inc./WKSU. These assets are to be used according to the most recent guidelines **, as executed by myself, the University, WKSU and the Kent State University Foundation.

  • A residuary bequest is a bequest of assets from the estate not named in other parts of the will. The language for this type of bequest may appear as:

I leave my residuary estate to the Kent State University Foundation, Inc. /WKSU. These assets are to be used according to the most recent guidelines**, as executed by myself, the University, WKSU and the Kent State University Foundation, Inc.

** Including the phrase "most recent guidelines" allows you to designate specific areas of interest and makes it easier to revise your guidelines without drafting a new will or codicil. An Estate Intention Letter or your signed letter to the Kent State University Foundation will serve as your most recent guidelines.

Donors may also list the Kent State University Foundation as beneficiary on brokerage, financial or retirement accounts or life insurance. Our Federal Tax ID # is 34-657-6307.

As a legacy donor to WKSU, you become part of the Herrick Society of planned gift donors whose support benefits WKSU's future, as well as other areas of the university.
